What does a whole house humidifier installation involve? Cutting an opening in the plenum, mounting the unit, tapping a water line, running a drain, wiring to the furnace control board and a humidistat, then sizing and commissioning it so the house gains moisture without condensing water on the windows.
Key Takeaways
- EPA tells homeowners to keep indoor relative humidity between 30 and 50 percent and not to humidify above 50 percent.
- Aprilaire’s Model 600 bars a bypass unit where the plenums differ by more than 0.4 in. wg.
- Aprilaire’s Model 800 steam unit draws 11.5 amps and needs a minimum 20 amp dedicated circuit.
- International Plumbing Code Section 802.3.1 sets the indirect waste air gap at twice the pipe opening.
- Resideo’s HE240 and HE280 table steps the humidistat from 40 to 15 as outdoor air falls from above 20 °F to minus 20 °F.
What does a whole house humidifier installation actually involve?
A whole house humidifier installation is five trades in one afternoon: sheet metal, plumbing, drainage, low voltage wiring and controls. The unit hangs on the plenum, feeds off a water line, drains to a floor drain, and runs only when the blower runs. Miss one and it powers up but never wets the air.
The type changes the sheet metal and the power, not the order of work. What each one does sits in our guide to these units, and the day looks like any other heating installation at the air handler.
Where does each type mount on the duct system?
Bypass and fan powered evaporative units bolt over a cut opening in the supply or return plenum. A bypass unit also needs a 6 in. round duct to the opposite plenum, because it has no fan and borrows the pressure difference across the air handler. Steam units hang on a wall and inject into a straight supply run.
That borrowed pressure is the limit installers miss. Aprilaire’s Model 600 instructions say do not install the humidifier on systems with greater than 0.4 in. wg pressure differential between the plenums. Above that the bypass duct short circuits heated supply air back to the return. Support any bypass run longer than four feet.
| Type (example) | Where it mounts | Sheet metal work | Power |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bypass evaporative (Aprilaire 600) | Supply or return plenum | 10 in. by 12 3/4 in. opening plus a 6 in. collar opposite | 24 VAC, 0.5 A, never the blower circuit |
| Fan powered evaporative (Aprilaire 700) | Supply plenum or return, no bypass duct | 14 3/4 in. by 14 5/16 in. opening, one cut | 120 VAC, 0.8 A, not the furnace motor circuit |
| Steam (Aprilaire 800 and 865) | Wall cabinet, tube in a straight supply run | Tube opening plus 2 in. to 60 in. absorption distance | 120, 208 or 240 VAC, dedicated 20 A or 25 A circuit |
Two rules hold for every type: never cut a plenum face where the blanked off end of the cooling coil restricts air movement, and never hang the unit on the furnace jacket. Know how your supply and return sides balance first.
How does the water supply get tapped, and is the saddle valve legal?
Every type runs on a 1/4 in. copper line from a water tap to the fill solenoid, and most ship with a self piercing saddle valve in the carton. That valve is what inspectors argue about. The International Residential Code, section P2906.6.1 in the code text reprinted by UpCodes because the code site blocks automated access, says the use of saddle tap fittings and combination saddle tap and valve fittings shall be prohibited.
The valve in the box is not automatically approved
Manufacturers still furnish saddle valves because they are fast. That is a shipping decision, not a code ruling. Where the residential code is adopted as written, the compliant tap is a soldered or pressed tee with a quarter turn stop.
Pressure and water temperature matter too. Aprilaire caps supply pressure at 125 psi on the Model 600 and 25 psi to 120 psi on the steam units. Evaporative units accept hot water up to 140 °F for maximum capacity. Steam units are the reverse: Aprilaire says to plumb them to cold, hard or softened water, because unheated water cools the canister discharge.
Where does the drain go, and why does it need an air gap?
Evaporative units discharge unevaporated water through a 1/2 in. inside diameter hose, steam units through 7/8 in. tubing. Both need a constant downward slope to a floor drain, no kinks. Where the line meets the building drainage system it is indirect waste, and the code will not let it connect directly.
The International Plumbing Code requires indirect waste piping to discharge through an air gap or air break into a waste receptor, and Section 802.3.1 fixes the gap at not less than twice the effective opening of the pipe. For a 1/2 in. hose, a one inch gap above the flood rim.
How is the humidifier wired to the furnace board and the humidistat?
Almost all of it is low voltage. The humidistat closes a 24 volt circuit that opens the water solenoid, and the blower proves through a furnace accessory terminal labelled HUM, ACC or EAC. Aprilaire’s diagrams warn in capitals: do not wire the transformer into the blower circuit.
Humidistat placement decides whether the control reads true. Resideo’s HE240 and HE280 guide puts it on the return plenum or a living space wall and says to locate it at least 8 in. upstream from the humidifier in the return air duct. Aprilaire adds the rest: never on the supply plenum. It is the sensing problem thermostats have, one duct over.
Two cases need extra parts. With no usable accessory terminal, Aprilaire specifies a current sensing relay wired into the 24 volt control circuit only, so the humidifier follows the blower motor rather than the heat call. On downflow furnaces the blower must keep running after the call, or plenum heat kills the control.
Why a whole house humidifier installation has to match the air handler airflow
Evaporative output is air moving across a wet pad, so the gallon per day figure is a test result, not a promise. ANSI/AHRI Standard 610 rates humidifiers that depend on the air stream of a central air system. Starve the air and the rating does not arrive.
A bypass unit is the most exposed: it moves no air itself. Throughput comes from the pressure difference between the plenums, so the 0.4 in. wg ceiling has an implied floor under it. A restrictive filter shifts that number, one reason the highest MERV rating is not the right one. Fix the airflow problem people blame on the equipment first.
How do manufacturers size a whole house humidifier installation?
By house volume and shell tightness, not floor area. Aprilaire’s steam table pairs one capacity with three house sizes: an 11.5 gal/day unit covers 2,500 sq ft of tight construction, 1,500 sq ft of average and 1,000 sq ft of loose, at an 8 ft ceiling.
Volume is the load, not floor area. Where a house has more than one furnace or air handler, Aprilaire says a humidifier belongs on each.
What humidity should the humidistat hold, and what about window condensation?
EPA sets the band at below 60 percent, ideally between 30 and 50 percent, and its humidifier factsheet says not to humidify above 50 percent. DOE’s Building America Solution Center calls 35 to 50 percent ideal. Neither number survives a cold snap unaltered.
Condensation is a surface problem. EPA is blunt: if water condenses on windows, walls or pictures, lower the humidistat setting or reduce use. A house that reads cold and clammy has the opposite fault, and that one wants a dehumidifier.
Outdoor reset walks the setpoint down automatically. Resideo publishes the manual equivalent.
| When outside temperature is | Use this control setting |
|---|---|
| Above 20 °F | 40 |
| 20 °F | 35 |
| 10 °F | 30 |
| 0 °F | 25 |
| minus 10 °F | 20 |
| minus 20 °F | 15 |

How do you commission a whole house humidifier installation?
Water has to reach the drain with the blower running before anyone leaves. Aprilaire’s closeout list is four items: valve fully open, joints watertight, humidifier working, bypass damper in the right seasonal position.
- Open the water supply and check every joint dry.
- Turn the humidistat to its highest setting and raise the thermostat 10 °F so the blower runs.
- Confirm the solenoid valve clicks open and water flows from the drain hose.
- Set the bypass damper handle to the winter position.
- Reset the humidistat for automatic operation; Resideo recommends 35 percent relative humidity.
What to check in the first season
Watch the windows on the first hard freeze and drop the setting if they wet. Then fold the humidifier into the annual furnace service round so the pad, canister and drain get looked at.

Frequently asked questions
Can you install a whole house humidifier yourself?
The work touches a potable water line, a drain and the furnace control board, so permits often apply. Aprilaire states that warranty is void unless the humidifier is installed by a qualified heating and air conditioning contractor, making a self install a warranty decision too.
Does a whole house humidifier need its own circuit?
Only the steam type. Aprilaire’s Model 800 needs a minimum 20 amp dedicated circuit at its 11.5 amp factory setting, or 25 amps when switched to 16 amps. A bypass unit runs on 24 volts at 0.5 amps, a fan powered unit on a 120 volt outlet.
Can the drain go to a condensate pump instead of a floor drain?
Yes. Aprilaire calls for at least 16 inches of drain line between a steam humidifier and the pump. Canister water reaches 212 °F, so the unit blends cold supply water to temper the discharge below 140 °F before it meets plastic.
Should the humidifier go on the supply or the return plenum?
Either, for most evaporative units. Aprilaire’s Model 600 is reversible for left or right hand bypass and mounts on supply or return. The fan powered Model 700 must not sit on a supply plenum above 0.4 in. wg static. Never the furnace jacket.
Why does the humidifier run but the humidity stays low?
Check the blower proof first. Resideo’s instructions state that the furnace blower must be on to activate the humidifier, so a dead accessory terminal or a missing current sensing relay shows up this way. Low airflow across a bypass pad looks identical.
What should a whole house humidifier be set to in winter?
Resideo recommends handing a house over at 35 percent relative humidity, inside the 30 to 50 percent band EPA publishes. The setting then has to fall with outdoor temperature, to 15 at minus 20 °F, unless an outdoor sensor walks it down.
