AC Condenser Fan Motor: Symptoms, Safe Checks and How to Match a Replacement

Technician removing an AC condenser fan motor from the top of an outdoor air conditioning unit

Is my AC condenser fan motor bad? If the outdoor fan is stopped, slow or grinding while the compressor runs, the AC condenser fan motor or its run capacitor is the likely cause. Switch the system off: without that fan, head pressure climbs until a safety switch or the compressor overload trips.

Key Takeaways

  • Goodman’s GSX14 fan motor is 1/8 hp at 1.5 to 2.5 tons and 1/4 hp at 4 and 5 tons (Goodman SS-GSX14).
  • Rheem lists a stopped condenser fan as a cause of its pressure alert; its high pressure switch opens above 575 psig (Rheem 7083500).
  • One dual run capacitor often feeds fan and compressor, such as Goodman’s 5/30 MFD part (Goodman repair parts).
  • Genteq says an OEM ECM fan motor must be replaced with an OEM equivalent (Genteq MCM-G0169-GQ).
  • The stick start breaks OSHA 1910.333: lock out the circuit and discharge capacitors before contact.
  • Universal PSC motors set their own capacitor: 5 MFD for the Nidec RESCUE 5462, 7.5 MFD for the 5464 (Nidec U.S. Motors).

What does an AC condenser fan motor do, and what is it rated for?

The AC condenser fan motor turns the propeller on top of the outdoor unit, pulling air across the coil so refrigerant can shed the heat it carried outside. It is a small, fractional horsepower motor cooled by the air it moves. The coil side is covered in what the outdoor condenser does.

Genteq Evergreen OM 6303S, universal ECM 1/3 hp, replaces 1/3 to 1/12 825 or 1075 None in its wiring

Goodman’s GSX14 parts list calls these motors 8 pole (“8 PL”). On 60 Hz power an 8 pole motor’s synchronous speed is 900 RPM (120 × 60 ÷ 8), and it runs a little slower. That is why Genteq maps 8 pole to motors rated 800 to 850 RPM, and 6 pole to 1000 to 1100 RPM.

What are the symptoms of a bad condenser fan motor?

The symptoms of a bad condenser fan motor are a stopped fan with the compressor running, a slow or late start, bearing noise, and cutouts on hot afternoons. Rule out the cheaper run capacitor first.

What you see or hear Likely cause Who checks it
Fan stopped, compressor running, hot air off the top Fan motor, or the fan section of the run capacitor Technician; switch off now
Fan slow to start or turning slowly Weak capacitor, or dry, worn bearings Technician
Grinding, squealing or rattling on top Worn bearings, or a loose blade striking the orifice Owner listens; technician repairs
Fan runs, compressor silent Contactor closed; fault on the compressor side Technician
Unit cuts out on hot days, restarts later Fan stopped, pressure climbed, a safety opened Technician
Heat pump fan pauses for minutes in winter Normal defrost Nobody, if it resumes

A fan that runs while the compressor stays silent proves the contactor is pulling in: Genteq wires an AC fan motor to L1 and L2 on its load side, the compressor’s switched power. Suspect the compressor’s capacitor section, overload or the compressor, where a hard start kit can come up.

On heat pumps Genteq wires the fan through the defrost board, so it stops during a defrost cycle. Squeals and rattles are sorted in our guide to HVAC noises.

Why is the condenser fan not spinning while the compressor runs?

A condenser fan not spinning while the compressor runs has lost its own circuit: the motor winding, the fan section of the run capacitor or the fan wiring. Goodman’s GSX14 wiring legend labels one part “RCCF, run capacitor for compressor & fan”.

A dual capacitor such as Goodman’s 5/30 MFD part carries one rating per motor, so a weak fan section can stall the fan while the compressor keeps running. Ratings and failure modes are in our capacitor explainer.

Running without the fan is not harmless. Rheem lists “condenser fan is not running” under Flash Code 2, pressure out of limits, and its high pressure switch opens above 575 psig and recloses at 460 psig. Owners often report that stop and restart loop as AC short cycling.

Is it safe to push-start a condenser fan with a stick?

No. A stick start means reaching through the guard of an energized unit, beside a charged capacitor, to start a blade that is meant to catch and spin.

Why the stick start is unsafe

OSHA 1910.333(b)(2) requires circuits to be locked out or tagged before contact, says “capacitors shall be discharged”, and requires verification with test equipment. A stick start does none of the three. Genteq adds “do not operate equipment without guards in place,” and Rheem warns that servicing with power on “may cause personal injury or death” (Rheem 708161b).

A blade that needs a push has a weak capacitor or tight bearings and will stall again. The safe test is a hand spin with power off at the outdoor disconnect and breaker, by whoever tests the capacitor.

What can a homeowner check, and what needs a technician?

Owners can check the thermostat, breaker, disconnect and clearance, and look at the blade with power off. Capacitor, voltage and motor work happens inside a live panel and belongs to a technician.

  1. Set the thermostat to Cool, below room temperature. If nothing outside runs, use our AC not turning on checklist.
  2. Check the breaker and disconnect. A breaker that trips again is a fault, not a reset job.
  3. Clear leaves, grass and anything against the coil or on the top grille.
  4. With power off, look through the guard for debris or a blade touching the orifice. Leave the guard on.
  5. Oil only motors with oil tubes: Rheem specifies 10 drops of SAE No. 20 motor oil per tube.

A technician reads the capacitor, then checks voltage at the motor: Genteq says a motor that does not run with proper line voltage between its white and black wires has failed. Amp draw is compared with nameplate FLA, 0.95 A on a 3 ton GSX14. The meters are in our rundown of HVAC tools.

How do you match a replacement condenser fan motor?

Match voltage, horsepower, RPM class, rotation, shaft and mounting, and capacitor, then confirm the motor type. Read the old nameplate and the unit’s data plate.

  1. Voltage. The GSX14 is 208/230 V single phase; both universals are rated 208-230 V.
  2. Horsepower. Match it. Universals cover ranges by tap: 1/3 to 1/6 hp on the Nidec 5462, 1/3 to 1/12 hp on the Genteq 6303S.
  3. RPM class. 825 RPM replaces motors rated 800 to 850 RPM; 1075 RPM replaces 1000 to 1100 RPM.
  4. Rotation. CW or CCW, viewed from the lead end. Goodman lists blades by rotation, such as a 20 inch CCW blade.
  5. Shaft and mounting. The 6303S has a 0.5 inch shaft, 6.5 inches long, in a 48 frame; the Nidec RESCUE shell is 5.6 inches across.
  6. Capacitor. Use the new motor’s MFD, 5 for the Nidec 5462 or 7.5 for the 5464, even if the dual capacitor must change.
  7. Refrigerant. On an A2L unit (R-454B or R-32), ask for a listed motor; Genteq says the 6303S is A2L certified.

PSC or ECM: which condenser fan motor is in your unit?

Read the nameplate: a PSC (permanent split capacitor) motor has capacitor leads, and an ECM (electronically commutated motor) does not. Goodman’s GSX14 parts list labels its fan motor PSC. Universal ECMs replace PSC motors, but never an OEM ECM.

Motor Capacitor What it can replace
PSC (Nidec RESCUE) Yes, 5 or 7.5 MFD A PSC motor of matching hp, RPM and rotation
Universal ECM (Genteq 6303S) None; wires to the contactor Shaded pole or PSC motors only
OEM ECM Per the unit maker Only an OEM equivalent, per Genteq

Genteq says the 6303S holds its selected RPM, draws only the current the blade needs (2.8 A maximum) and starts within 5 seconds of power. The indoor version of this split is in our furnace blower motor guide.

We found no federal efficiency standard for replacement condenser fan motors; DOE’s small motor rules cover the “NEMA general purpose” motors defined in 10 CFR 431.442.

How we researched this

Researched October 9, 2026. We read and cite nine primary documents: OSHA’s electrical work rule, the eCFR small motor definition, Goodman GSX14 specification and parts sheets, two Rheem installation manuals, and Genteq and Nidec U.S. Motors documents (Tier 2, cited only for their own products).

We excluded the ranking retailer and contractor pages: their prices, lifespans and RPM claims carry no source. No Reddit (electrical safety topic) and no price (no federal series). Your nameplate governs.

Frequently asked questions

Can a bad capacitor stop the condenser fan from spinning?

Yes. A PSC fan motor is designed to run with a set capacitor, 5 MFD for the Nidec RESCUE 5462, and Goodman’s GSX14 shares one run capacitor between compressor and fan. A weak fan section can stall the fan while the compressor runs, so a technician tests the capacitor before condemning the motor.

What RPM is an AC condenser fan motor?

Universal replacements are set to one of two classes. Genteq’s Evergreen OM runs 825 RPM to replace motors rated 800 to 850 RPM, or 1075 RPM to replace motors rated 1000 to 1100 RPM. Goodman’s GSX14 uses 8 pole motors, which fall in the lower class.

Is it safe to replace a condenser fan motor yourself?

It is electrical work beside a charged capacitor, and Genteq says only trained and qualified technicians should install its motor. OSHA 1910.333 requires lockout, capacitor discharge and verification with test equipment before contact. In many jurisdictions HVAC electrical work also needs a license.

Why does my condenser fan run but the compressor does not?

A running fan proves power is reaching the load side of the contactor, where Genteq wires the fan alongside the compressor. The fault is on the compressor side: its capacitor section, its overload or the compressor. Rheem lists a failed run capacitor first among causes of its locked rotor alert.

Should I oil my condenser fan motor?

Only if it has oil tubes. Rheem calls for 10 drops of SAE No. 20 motor oil per tube and warns against oiling motors not factory equipped with them. Genteq’s 6303S has permanently lubricated ball bearings. Switch power off first.

How much does it cost to replace an AC condenser fan motor?

We do not publish a figure: no federal or national lab series tracks it, and the ranges on contractor sites carry no source. Ask for an itemized quote naming the motor model, hp, RPM and any capacitor. Genteq’s Evergreen OM warranty runs 24 months from installation or 30 months from manufacture.
