What is the AC unit cost in federal and national lab estimates?
Three public research sources price a new installed central air conditioner, each in a different dollar year. EIA gives $5,310 for a 3-ton northern minimum unit in 2022 dollars, DOE averaged $4,092 in 2015 dollars, and LBNL recorded a $5,930 median in 2019 dollars.
None is a measured market price. EIA’s figures, prepared by Guidehouse and Leidos, trace to DOE’s 2016 rulemaking analysis and LBNL’s 2021 study. All three describe the split system covered in how central air moves heat through ducts: an outdoor condensing unit paired with an indoor coil.

The DOE figures are oldest. They come from the direct final rule of January 6, 2017, which set the standards effective January 1, 2023, and those are the federal standards in force in September 2026. DOE used 2015 dollars and a 2021 purchase year.

How does AC unit cost change with system size?
Cost climbs steeply at the large end. In DOE’s 2017 analysis a 14 SEER coil-only split air conditioner cost $2,754 installed at 2 tons, $3,540 at 3 tons and $6,175 at 5 tons, all in 2015 dollars, so the 5-ton system cost 2.2 times the 2-ton system.
Installation explains much of that gap. The DOE technical support document lists installation at $853 for 2 tons and $2,923 for 5 tons, which is 31% of the 2-ton total, 38% at 3 tons and 47% at 5 tons. DOE drew installation labor from RS Means Mechanical Cost Data 2015.

How much more does higher SEER2 efficiency add?
In EIA’s 2022-dollar estimates, moving a 3-ton northern system from the 13.4 SEER2 minimum to the 16.2 SEER2 high tier adds $670 installed, from $5,310 to $5,980. The ENERGY STAR tier at 15.2 SEER2 sits at $5,880.
Location sets the legal floor. Under 10 CFR 430.32(c)(6), a split air conditioner under 45,000 Btu/h installed in the Southeast or Southwest must reach 14.3 SEER2, which is why EIA’s southern minimum is $5,520. State lists are in our guide to national and regional SEER2 floors.

How far have equipment prices moved since each estimate?
Equipment prices have risen since every one of these dollar years. The BLS index for HVAC equipment manufacturing reached 324.82 in August 2026, which is 80.7% above its 2015 average, 60.0% above 2019 and 19.0% above 2022.

Which central air conditioner sizes ship most in 2026?
Mid-sized systems dominate. Through July 2026, the 22,000 to 26,900 Btu/h band (2-ton) was 21.8% of residential AC and heat pump shipments and the 33,000 to 38,900 Btu/h band (3-ton) was 22.0%, against 8.6% for 54,000 to 64,900 Btu/h (5-ton), per AHRI.
The bands combine ACs and heat pumps, 5,466,841 residential units under 65,000 Btu/h through July; air conditioners alone were 3,063,290. EIA likewise uses 36 kBtu/h, or 3 tons, as its typical capacity, and DOE projected 3-ton units at 39% of coil-only split AC shipments in 2021. What these AC unit cost numbers are not
These are modelled or benchmark averages, not quotes and not a measured national price. No federal agency surveys what homeowners pay, the point made in our explainer on why HVAC replacement quotes vary.
- Not a quote. DOE builds installed cost from manufacturer cost, markups, sales tax and a labor estimate.
- Not today’s dollars. They are 2015, 2019 and 2022 dollars.
- Not ductwork. LBNL recorded duct replacement separately, medians $3,645 to $3,953 in 2019 dollars.
- Not your region. EIA splits north and south only; LBNL normalized to a national average.
- Not a random sample. LBNL’s 71 units came from energy program records.
- Not itemized. None of these tables separates permits, electrical upgrades or financing.
Common myth
No federal agency publishes a national “average AC unit cost”. Federal figures were built to test whether efficiency standards save consumers money, and each carries a dollar year. Contractor survey figures are not official data.

Excluded: vendor and contractor price surveys (no federal series behind them); DOE’s 2024 commercial unitary analysis (commercial equipment); NREL’s residential measures database (did not respond). Derived figures are our calculations and are labelled.

It depends on the household. EIA estimates a 16.2 SEER2 3-ton system adds $670 installed over the 13.4 SEER2 northern minimum, $5,980 against $5,310 in 2022 dollars. In DOE’s 2017 analysis, a national 16 SEER standard would have cost the average affected buyer $122 over the unit’s life, and 63% of affected buyers would have faced a net cost, in 2015 dollars.
How much more does a heat pump cost than a central air conditioner?
EIA puts a 3-ton heat pump at the 14.3 SEER2 and 7.5 HSPF2 minimum at $6,810 installed, $1,500 more than a northern minimum air conditioner at $5,310, in 2022 dollars. The heat pump also heats, so compare it with an air conditioner plus the heating it replaces.
Have AC prices gone up since these estimates were made?
Equipment prices have. The BLS producer price index for HVAC equipment manufacturing was 324.82 in August 2026, up 19.0% on its 2022 average and 80.7% on its 2015 average. That is a factory-gate measure of equipment prices, not an installed price paid by homeowners.
Do these AC unit cost figures include new ductwork?
No. The federal models price installing the air conditioner itself, and LBNL recorded duct work as a separate measure. In LBNL’s 2021 report, median duct system replacement costs ran from $3,645 to $3,953 in 2019 dollars. A quote with new ducts is a larger job.
Why is my quote higher than the federal estimate?
The estimates are in older dollars, they exclude much of the scope a real job carries, and they are averages. LBNL’s 71 central air conditioner installs had a $5,930 median in 2019 dollars, but the middle half ran from about $4,000 to $9,000, so wide spreads between individual jobs are normal.
