How to Reset a Furnace, AC or Oil Burner: What the Manuals Say, and When Not To

Homeowner learning how to reset furnace power at the switch beside a gas furnace in a basement

How to reset furnace controls? Set the thermostat to Off, cut furnace power for at least 10 seconds, restore it and call for heat. That clears a soft lockout on most modern gas furnaces. A tripped rollout button, a gas smell or an oil burner that keeps locking out means call a technician.

Key Takeaways

  • Copeland’s Carrier replacement control resets after 1 hour in lockout, or after 24 VAC is removed for more than 10 seconds (Copeland 50M56D-751).
  • Rheem’s 801T control locks out for one hour after four ignition trials (Rheem 801T manual).
  • On a tripped rollout switch, Rheem’s instruction reads “DO NOT jumper or reset this switch” (Rheem 801T).
  • Goodman says to reset its manual auxiliary limit only once (Goodman RS6612022).
  • Honeywell’s R7184 oil primary restricts resets after three lockouts in a row (Honeywell 69-1384).
  • Compressor protection holds an AC or heat pump off for 5 minutes after a restart (Resideo PRO 3000 guide).

What does it mean to reset a furnace?

Resetting a furnace clears a safety lockout so the control tries to start again. On a modern gas furnace you do it by cutting power or the thermostat call; on an oil burner, with a button on the primary control.

A reset buys one more set of attempts, not a repair. Goodman’s control locks out after three ignition retries, each trial for ignition lasting 4 seconds (Goodman RS6612022). Goodman notes a coated flame sensor alone can cause a lockout; see our guide to cleaning a flame sensor, and our control board troubleshooting guide for failed boards.

System What “reset” means Where Safe procedure Do NOT reset when
Gas furnace (hot surface ignition) Clear a board lockout No button; furnace switch or breaker Thermostat off, power off 10+ seconds, back on Gas smell, or it locks out again
Flame rollout switch Manual reset after flame left the burners Burner box, red button Technician only Always; the cause must be found
Auxiliary limit (some Goodman) Manual reset after overheating Blower compartment, red button New filter, reset once It trips a second time
Oil burner primary (Beckett, Honeywell) Clear soft lockout Box on the burner, red button Click once Red light solid, oil smell or smoke
Central AC or heat pump Power cycle, then compressor delay Breaker and outdoor disconnect Breaker off and on once, wait 5 minutes The breaker trips again
Thermostat Restart the control Wall unit Fresh batteries, check breaker Not a safety device

Where is the reset button on a furnace?

Most modern gas furnaces have no general reset button; the reset is the power switch, breaker or thermostat. The red buttons inside are manual-reset safety switches: a rollout switch on the burner manifold and, on some Goodman models, an auxiliary limit in the blower compartment.

On Goodman single-stage boards a rollout trip flashes six times (Goodman RS6612022). Our guide to limit and rollout switches maps each one. Standing-pilot furnaces reset by relighting, covered in our pilot light guide.

Correction

Top-ranking pages tell owners to hold a red button by the blower motor for 30 seconds. None of the furnace manuals we read says that. Goodman says “only reset the auxiliary limit control once,” and Rheem says a tripped rollout switch needs a qualified installer, service agency or gas supplier.

How to reset a furnace safely, step by step

Rule out gas, check the simple causes, then interrupt power once. This order follows the Goodman, Rheem and Copeland documents we read.

  1. Smell first. If you smell gas, stop. Goodman says “Do not try to light any appliance,” and to call the gas supplier from a neighbor’s phone (Goodman IOG-2030A).
  2. Check the thermostat: batteries, Heat mode, setpoint above room temperature.
  3. Check the filter and blower door. Goodman’s door interlock cuts power when the door is open: “Do not defeat this switch.”
  4. Note the status light flash count, if there is a window.
  5. Interrupt power once. Thermostat to Off, then switch or breaker off for more than 10 seconds, the Copeland reset rule.
  6. Restore power and call for heat.
  7. If it locks out again, call a technician.

The same steps cover how to reset a furnace after a power outage. An outage is itself a power cycle, which Rheem says clears a lockout once the fault is gone; if the furnace still sits idle, check the breaker and switch and cycle once. Burners that light and quit within minutes point elsewhere: see our article on a furnace that keeps shutting off.

How do you reset a furnace lockout?

Wait it out, or interrupt power or the heat call. Rheem’s 801T and Copeland’s Carrier control retry on their own after one hour; cutting power clears the lockout at once if the fault is gone.

2 to 20 sHeat call off window that clears a Rheem soft lockoutSource: Rheem 801T manual

Rheem’s soft lockout also clears if the heat call is off “greater than 2 seconds but less than 20 seconds” (Rheem 801T). A pressure switch that fails to close after 60 seconds triggers a lockout lasting five minutes, which points at venting or the inducer; see our pressure switch checks.

Some lockouts are hard: Rheem’s code 93 “cannot be reset by cycling the heat call.” Copeland’s code 14 means ignition lockout after 3 retries (Copeland 50M56D-751). Note the code before you cut power.

How do you reset an oil furnace burner?

To reset an oil furnace, press the red button on the burner’s primary control once; Beckett’s 7505 manual says “click the button 1-second.” If it fails again, stop: each failed start can leave unburned oil in the combustion chamber.

The Beckett 7505 has a 15 second lockout time to prove flame (Beckett 7505 manual), and Beckett lists it as the replacement for Honeywell R7184 models. Both makers limit owner resets. The R7184 enters restricted lockout after it locks out three times in a row (Honeywell 69-1384), and clearing it takes a 30 seconds hold meant for technicians.

Beckett’s hard lockout exists “to limit accumulation of unburned oil in the combustion chamber,” and a technician must confirm the appliance is free of oil and oil vapors before restarting. Our oil heating explainer covers the burner parts.

How do you reset an AC unit or heat pump?

Set the thermostat to Off, switch the breaker or outdoor disconnect off and on once, then set Cool or Heat and wait. Compressor protection “forces the compressor to wait 5 minutes before restarting” (Resideo PRO 3000 guide).

A breaker that trips again is the hard stop. Federal workplace rules say repetitive manual reclosing of circuit breakers is prohibited (29 CFR 1910.334); our breaker tripping guide explains why.

Most outdoor units reset pressure safeties themselves: Oxbox’s J4AC5 stops above 609 psig and restarts below 464 psig after a 3 minutes delay (Oxbox J4AC5 guide). Rheem notes automatic reset switches have no reset push button (Rheem RXAB-A04), so a button means a manual switch; leave that to a technician.

When should you not reset a furnace?

Do not reset when a safety device found a hazard or one reset already failed. Rheem calls a safety switch shutdown “an indication of a potential safety hazard.” Stop and call a technician or the gas supplier if:

  • You smell gas. Leave and call from outside.
  • A red rollout button has popped.
  • A manual limit trips a second time.
  • The oil burner locks out again after one press.
  • The breaker trips again after one reset.
  • You smell burning, see soot, or a CO alarm sounds.
  • A hard lockout code will not clear.

Rheem links its burner box over-temperature switches to inadequate combustion air supply, so keep CO alarms working; see our CO detector placement rules.

Should you reset it? A one-pass decision flow 1. Smell gas or burning? Yes: leave, call gas supplier 2. Red rollout button popped? Yes: do not reset, call tech 3. Filter, door, thermostat OK? No: fix those first 4. Power off 10 s, then on Runs: done. Locks out: call No No Yes Oil burner: one press only. AC: one breaker reset, then wait 5 min.

How we researched this

Researched October 9, 2026. We consulted 13 manufacturer and federal documents and cite 10: Goodman, Rheem, Copeland (Carrier kit), Beckett and Honeywell controls manuals, a Resideo thermostat guide, an Oxbox condenser guide and 29 CFR 1910.334. Timers are maker specifications for those controls; yours may differ. Contractor blogs and SEO pages were excluded for every number, and Reddit was skipped because this is a gas, oil and electrical safety topic. No prices appear: no federal source publishes them.

Frequently asked questions

Where is the reset button on a furnace?

Most modern gas furnaces do not have one; the reset is the furnace switch, breaker or thermostat. Red buttons inside are safety switches, such as Goodman’s manual rollout control on the burner manifold of 90% furnaces. Oil furnaces have the button on the burner’s primary control box.

How do I reset a furnace from the thermostat?

Turn the thermostat to Off, wait a few seconds, then set Heat above room temperature. Rheem’s 801T manual says a soft lockout clears if the heat call is off for greater than 2 seconds but less than 20 seconds. Goodman resets its ignition control by opening and closing the thermostat circuit.

How do I reset my furnace after a power outage?

An outage is already a power cycle, which clears most lockouts once the fault is gone. If the furnace stays off, check the breaker, switch and blower door, then cut power for at least 10 seconds. Copeland’s Carrier control resets after more than 10 seconds without 24 VAC.

How long does a furnace lockout last?

On the controls we checked, one hour. Rheem’s 801T lockout after four ignition trials resets automatically after one hour, as does Copeland’s 50M56D-751 after 1 hour. Rheem also uses a five minute lockout for a pressure switch fault, and its hard lockout, code 93, cannot be cleared by cycling the heat call.

How many times can I press the oil burner reset button?

Once. Beckett says to click the 7505 reset for 1 second; if the burner locks out again, call for service. Honeywell’s R7184 restricts resets after three lockouts in a row, and Beckett says its hard lockout limits unburned oil in the combustion chamber.

How do I reset my AC unit outside?

Set the thermostat to Off, switch the outdoor disconnect or breaker off and on once, then set Cool and wait 5 minutes for compressor protection. Many outdoor units reset pressure safeties automatically; the Oxbox J4AC5 restarts below 464 psig. If the breaker trips again, call a technician.

Why does my furnace reset button keep tripping?

A manual reset switch that keeps tripping is reporting a real fault, usually overheating or flame rollout. Goodman says to reset its auxiliary limit only once and have a qualified servicer find the cause of a second trip. Rheem says not to jumper or reset a tripped rollout switch.
